Organizational Culture & Safety

Organizational Culture & Safety

Strong organizational cultures align people, purpose, and practice to create workplaces where everyone can contribute and succeed.

The culture of a workplace is a reflection of its people—their communication, values, and alignment of goals. Building and sustaining a safe and healthy organization requires more than policies; it requires intentional strategies that strengthen culture, guide safe recruitment, and embed ethical operational practices.

Safeguarding can only be effective in workplaces that are healthy, multicultural, and supportive. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEI&B)—including Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI)—are essential for fostering environments where people feel safe, valued, and empowered. When employees can bring their authentic selves to work and openly contribute to the shared mission, organizations thrive. When stated values, everyday behaviors, and organizational policies are aligned, safety and well-being are not just ideals—they are lived realities.

Policies such as safeguarding frameworks (including protection from sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment, or PSEAH), DEI&B commitments, codes of ethics or conduct, and protections against discrimination, harassment, and bullying provide important guardrails. But policies alone are not enough. For them to be meaningful, they must be actionable and reflected in the daily practices and behaviors of every person in the organization.
