✨ From Safe to Sovereign: How I Took Back Control of My Career

For years, my professional life unfolded according to someone else’s map. Promotions, praise, progress—all of it looked great from the outside. But quietly, something was off.

It all felt a little too safe.

And while safety is essential for humans to thrive, there's a difference between feeling secure and feeling stuck.

After nearly 15 years in progressive leadership roles within child protection (and one year before that as a Children’s Advocate in the domestic violence sector), I came to a difficult truth: The work was important, but how I was engaged in the work no longer aligned with my sense of purpose or possibility.

So, I did something radical: I left.

This wasn’t a leap of blind faith. It was a risk but a calculated one. Rooted in reflection, built on strategy, and powered by the question: What do I actually want next?

I traveled. I untangled my identity from my job title. I stopped living on autopilot and started rebuilding from within.

After passing the bar on the first try (yes, I’m still proud and 2014 bar takers know it was no joke), I launched my own legal practice focused on immigration, mediation, and child protection. But fear paralyzed me. I was more worried about messing up than showing up, figuratively speaking.

I pivoted into full-time immigration law with an organization. And guess what? I hated it.

But I didn’t stop there. I found my way into the complex, messy, mission-driven world of Safeguarding at one of the largest global child-serving NGOs—leading U.S. safeguarding efforts solo for years while also managing an international team across continents and time zones.

It was intense. Rewarding, yes, but also exhausting: 14-hour workdays. A never-ending meeting loop. When my inspiring and supportive manager left, so did much of the organizational urgency around safeguarding. What once felt like meaningful work started to feel like just a job, not a calling. And that wasn’t enough. After five transformative (and sometimes grueling) years, I knew it was time. I gave myself 12 months to plan my exit. I saved. I mapped scenarios. I even did fear journaling. I had the hard conversations with my partner, my family, and most importantly, myself.

And then I did it. I bet on me.

Today, I run a thriving consultancy business. But more than that, I’ve built a career that reflects my values, protects my peace, and challenges me in all the right ways.
